Directions to Trailhead: From Whaweap Marina, boat northeast to West Canyon (Mileage Buoy #26). Follow the canyon to the end of the navigable waterway. Anchor and begin hiking up the canyon. Trail Description: The hike begins in a wide canyon with a little trickle of water coming from up canyon. As you hike the walls get narrower and higher and then widen again. It is all very pretty. After a mile you will reach THE SLOT! This is a one meter wide canyon that has a cold deep swimming hole you must swim through. The swimming hole is approx 120 yards long. It is the best part of the trip. After the slot, the canyon again widens and the bottom gets very sandy. Remove your shoes for best traction in this area. The canyon continues to narrow and widen several times over the next 2 miles. We turned around before the second slot. You can continue to hike this canyon for 15 miles! The upper canyon is supposed to be the prettiest part. Return the way you came. |
