The Narrows

Trailhead: Chamberlain Ranch

Length: 16 miles one way

Difficulty: Difficult

National Park: Zion National Park

Journal: "Another Verley Adventure"

The Narrows of the Virgin River

Directions to Trailhead:

From the Visitor Center, leave the park through the east entrance and the Mount Carmel tunnel. Approximately 8 miles east of the tunnel turn north onto a road that has a sign saying North Fork. Follow this road until it ends at Chamberlain's Ranch.

Trail Description:

You must obtain a permit from the Zion Visitor Center before embarking on this trip! Permit were $4.00 a piece.

From the trailhead, cross the river and follow a road for the first 3 miles. When the road ends, follow the river. You will cross the river many times and spend a good deal of time walking in the cold water. Be prepared. Some holes in the river may send you swimming. Line your packs with garbage bags to keep your stuff dry.

Camping is permitted only in designated slots and you must have reserved a campsite when you obtained your permit. The majority of the campsites are found after the river merges with Deep Creek.

The last 4 miles of this trip are through "The Narrows"; this is a beautiful area where 600 foot walls tower over you as you wade through the river. There is no high ground in this area so be alert for flash floods.

The trail ends at the Temple of Sinawava. You must hike this trip from top to bottom. Trips from the bottom to Chamberlains Ranch are not permitted.
