Directions to Trailhead: From West Glacier, take the Going to the Sun Road to Logan Pass. Trailhead is located across the road from the Visitor Center. Trail Description: This popular trail is a favorite among those visiting Glacier National Park. The Garden Wall Trail follows along the west face of the Continental Divide and offers spectacular views of the glacial valleys below. As it leaves the trailhead, the trail switchbacks down for the first several hundred yards. Then, it winds around a sheer cliff face. This part is not for the meek, for there is a long drop off down the other side! The trail then begins to climb gently towards the saddle behind Haystack Butte, at 3.4 miles. At 7.6 miles is the Granite Park Chalet, in which backpackers can stay the night for a fee. The trail eventually ends at The Loop, at 11.6 miles. This trail is a great place to see wildlife, especially mountain goats, hoary marmots, and ground squirrels. There are also many waterfalls to see during the thaw, as well as lots of beautiful foliage (hence the name "Garden Wall"). Return the way you came. |
