Directions to Trailhead: From Flagstaff, drive north on US Highway 180 to Snow Bowl Road. Follow Snow Bowl Road 4.5 miles to the Lamar Haines Memorial Wildlife Area, on the right. Park at the gate. Trail Description: This trail can be done as a clockwise or a counter-clockwise loop. The description given here is for the clockwise loop. The trail begins as a very gentle climb on an old Jeep road that parallels Snow Bowl Road. You will follow this road as it winds up the hill, crests, then descends gently towards a fork in the road, at 0.2 miles. Take the left fork for the clockwise loop. The road continues through a very lush, dark forest; then, it emerges and follows the power lines for 0.25 miles. The area is so pretty that the power lines just seem out of place. At 0.75 miles, you will find a spur trail that will take you to Ludwig Veit's Cabin, built in 1892. The 160-acre homestead has a well and a storage shed that are fun for the kids to explore. The cabin itself has been cut down so that no one can enter it - it stands about 5 feet tall now - but it is still an interesting artifact. At 0.8 miles, you will come to a plaque commemorating Lamar Haines and his efforts at wildlife preservation. You will also find pictographs on the rocks in this area. The loop continues through beautiful aspen forests and soons winds its way back to rejoin the main trail. At this point, return the way you came - the trailhead is 0.2 miles away. |
