Moody Point Trail

Directions to Trailhead:

From Claypool (between Miami and Globe) take State Highway 188 northwest for approximately 15 miles to its junction with State Highway 288. Turn right onto Highway 288 and drive north for approximately 25.5 miles to FR 487. Drive 6.25 miles up FR 487. There is a large parking area on the left. The trail begins on the right. FR 487 requires a high clearance vehicle and is closed from December 15th to March 15th due to snow.

Trail Description:

This trail is one of the longest and most difficult in the Sierra Ancha wilderness. It is 8.6 miles in length and descends 4200 feet from the Moody Point TH to the Leisure Canyon TH. We only hike the top 1.2 miles form the Rim Trail #139 to FR 287. We were unable to find the Moody Point Trail south of the Rim Trail.

This trail has been recently maintained and although it passes through the area devastated by the 2000 Coon fire, it is in good condition.

From the Rim Trail #139, the trail follows a finger ridge as it heads west. In .3 miles you will begin climbing along a drainage. This is the beginning of a series of long switchbacks. It is here that the majority of elevation is covered. After the switchbacks end, the trail travels through a flat forested grove. After the grove there is another section of climbing and switchbacks, but it is much shorter than the first. After this section the trail climbs must less and ends at FR 487 after 1 mile.
