Directions to Trailhead: From Alpine go north 5.5 miles on US 191 to FR 56. Turn east on FR 56 and go 3.6 miles to Terry Flat. Take left fork .5 miles past Tool Box Draw to trailhead. Trail Description: As you leave your vehicle, you will enter the Wilderness and an area that was severely burned by a 1951 fire. The result is that you will be walking thorough a dense grove of young aspens. The trail switchbacks through the aspen grove and emerges at 1.3 miles in Tool Box Meadow. There are some outstanding views from here. The trail follows the edge of the meadow and then climbs through a spruce and pine area to a junction with the Government Trail (little used). The last mile follows an old road to the lookout tower. From here the views are incredible. There is no source of water on this trail so bring your own. Return the way you came. |
